Take Shorter Showers

The average American taking a five-minute shower uses more water than a typical person in a developing country slum uses in a whole day, according to the 2006 United Nations Human Development Report. For those of us who live in the United States, it’s easy to forget how precious certain resources are. Water is an example of one of the many resources we often take for granted. Preserve the world around you by using less water in your daily life. One way you can do this is by taking shorter showers.

Taking shorter showers will have positive effects on the environment, like preserving drinking water supplies and saving some of the energy it takes to run water-cleaning facilities. It will also have some great effects on your bank account.

Step It Up

Challenge yourself and your family to take shorter showers. Make it race to see who can take the quickest shower and give the winner a price. After a month of taking shorter showers, compare your water bill to the one from the month before to find out how much money you saved. Consider sharing that extra money with those who don’t have access to water, by donating it to a charity that provides clean water to third world countries.

Keep It Simple

Saving water can also be done through taking fewer showers. Try to schedule your showers so that you aren’t taking more than are necessary, without neglecting your appearance.
