Call or Visit Someone Who is Sick

Being sick is no fun. It can be frusterating because you are not able to do the things you normally do. Not being able to socialize with people you normally see can also make being sick very lonely. Call someone who you know is sick and ask them how they are. Or, surprise them with a visit and bring flowers or a card. Knowing that someone cares about you is often the best medicine!

Benefits:

Visiting or calling someone when they are sick will lift their spirits. Whether they have a common cold or something more serious that requires them to stay in bed or go to the hospital, they will appreciate care and concern.

Step It Up:

When you call or visit, take time to really listen to how they are doing. Then ask them if there is anything you can do to help. Maybe you can bring a meal over or to their house or walk their dog or feed their pets for them. Perhaps you could even clean the house or bring in the mail. Being sick is exhausting! Offer to take care of some of the little things for them while they are under the weather so they can focus on getting better and stronger, instead of worrying about everything they've fallen behind on.

Keep It Simple:

If you don't have time for a visit or a long conversation, you can still write a quick note and put it in the mail! An encouraging letter will lift their spirits, too. Just let them know that you are thinking of them during this time!

As a social worker I make it a priority to let my residents at the nursing home know how much they are loved and appreciated. Some residents don't have family who can visit very often and some have no family at all. It is important for them to know that they have someone there for them!
