Make Blankets For The Homeless
"Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does." -William James
Imagine sleeping outside in the cold night after night, without the comfort of family and friends or even a blanket. This is a reality that exists in cities across the world. Sometimes, we get so caught up in our own lives that it’s easy to turn a blind eye to someone in need, and walk right past them. Do you know how to sew or crochet? Use your talents to help those who are less fortunate by making a blanket for someone who has none. Even just one blanket will make a difference for someone.
Donating a blanket or quilt to someone who has none will help keep him or her warm and comfortable during cold nights. Every year, homeless die on the streets of hypothermia, something that could be avoided if they had the means - like a warm blanket. For someone who is homeless, who is constantly ignored by others, just the gesture of giving them a blanket will remind them of the kindness that exists in the world, and reassure that person of their own self worth.
Step It Up
Host a sewing party and invite a group of friends to help you make blankets for the homeless. Then, as a group, go out and distribute the blankets to the homeless in your community. Include a greeting card with a simple “hello.”
Keep It Simple
Have extra scraps in your fabric stash? Use them to sew quilts to donate to your local homeless shelter. It won't take much effort for you, but it will make a huge difference for those who receive the blankets.
- The Sleeping Bag Project is a project to make sleeping bags for the homeless.
- Donate blankets to Project Night Night to help homeless children have sweeter dreams.

I live in Rhode Island and I crochet blankets for homeless people. Would anyone in Rhode Island like to do this together? Patricia from Rhode Island
