People can become lonely for any number of reasons, regardless of their age. Some people are alone because they don’t feel like they fit in, while others may become lonely after the death of a close friend or relative. Other people might just suffer from an illness that doesn't allow them to see many people. Children with family troubles will often become lonely as a result of the tough issues they face at home. Offer your companionship to someone who is lonely in exchange for their wisdom or a lifetime of stories.
Visiting someone who’s lonely will help make that person feel accepted and loved. Even if you are the one person who makes the effort to visit them, it will make a world of difference in their life.
Take some time every once in a while to visit someone at a nursing or retirement home who doesn’t have many visitors. It doesn’t have to be someone you already know either, as many nursing homes have programs to connect volunteers with residents who don’t have many visitors. Or check out an organization like Big Brothers Big Sisters to make a difference in the life of a lonely child.
Visit a friend or relative –old or young –who you think might be lonely. Even just a short phone call or quick text message to let that person know you are thinking of them will help ease their loneliness.
