After a meandering path that began with being bored with traditional education, Andy Smallman discovered through an act of kindness—serving as a Big Brother to an 8-year-old member of his community—that he was meant to work with kids. He went on to earn bachelor's and master's degrees in education. Eventually, Andy founded two different, unconventional education formats, both of which ultimately mesh with the kindness movement.
In 1994, Andy founded the Puget Sound Community School, a Seattle-based alternative middle and high school, with his wife, Melinda Shaw. When his students complained that news media only cover bad news, Andy encouraged them to take the creation of good news into their own hands.
Converting that notion into action eventually led to Andy's creating The Practice of Kindness, a course in kindness for people of all ages and in any location. He facilitates these "kindness classes" online, posting new assignments every Sunday evening for fourteen weeks at onlinekindnessclass.wordpress.com.
Rachel Ash "Have you had a kindness shown? Pass it on;
'Twas not given for thee alone, Pass it on;
Let it travel down the years, Let it wipe another's tears,
'Til in Heaven the deed appears - Pass it on."
-Henry Burton
Take a look at the current Practice of Kindness class at http://kindpractice.wordpress.com. This one will be wrapping up in another couple of weeks but I'll start it again in January (as well as one or two others). Contact me if you are interested in participating.
