News spread pretty quickly: a young man is giving away free food on campus..... The good news traveled fast. Rumor turned to reality, Ryan was seen wheeling his red Radio Flyer down the halls stopping students, staff and faculty to ask them if they wanted a snack from his wagon. Upon further inspection of the wagon contents, you would find not only the shiny wrappers of candy, but also small bags of fruit snacks, packets of crackers and individually wrapped granola bars. The choices seemed endless and often the snack wagon customer would become overwhelmed. Upon seeing the struggle of indecision, Ryan would encourage them to take two. Most walked away from the wagon with a smile on their face and a warm feeling of generosity in their heart.
Ryan went hall to hall, asking everyone he encountered if they wanted anything from the snack wagon... Almost everyone stopped to inquire further and left with a snack to brighten their day. Ryan visited offices, classrooms and even the Automotive Mechanic lab where he encountered several hungry students putting a car engine back together.
Many assumed the college had asked Ryan to go around delivering treats, as he is often seen in the Student Life Office at his work study position. Truth be told, the Snack Wagon was not something NICC had paid for, rather Ryan, his mother Marilyn and Elaine Capek, an administrative assistant in a NICC Student Service Department had donated the treats. Ryan's Snack Wagon made several rounds that finals week, bringing joy to everyone it encountered.
Above is a picture of Ryan on a quick stop in the Admissions and Financial Office. I couldn't help but think that this story embodied the Random Acts of Kindness mentality. Please help me in recognizing Ryan for his inventive idea, generosity and of course, his kindness :). Pass this story on!
