These days, when I go to the mailbox I find ads, bills, credit card applications, and catalogs. But, seldom do I ever receive a good old fashioned card. When I do, I get so excited and rarely can I make it into the house before tearing open the envelope.

Today, instead of sending an email or getting on Facebook I decided to contact a friend using snail mail. I hope that when she receives her card that she gets as excited as I do. It is strange to think that something as simple and easy as sending a card could totally change someone’s day from blah to wonderful.

If it has been a while since you have put pen to paper to tell a friend how you feel about them, I suggest you try it today! You never know the impact this small gesture could have on someone’s day… or even their week!

Today, I helped a friend get his 5 children dressed, fed, packed, and loaded into their van. So that as soon as he got home from work, he could hop in the van and get his family to the airport on time to welcome his wife home. She had been out of town for a funeral and he knew that she would need the support of the whole crew upon her arrival.

I got to go to the airport with the family, and with five kids under 8 you can be sure we caused a scene! Five kids anxiously waited to see the face of their mom, and as soon as they saw her, they ran. Very heart warming, BUT they crossed the "Do Not Enter" area and the alarms began to sound. So here is this mom with 5 kids wrapped tightly around every extremity of her body and she is trying to make her way to the safe zone. As a mother of 5 children nothing fazes her anymore, she made her way to safety with a smile a mile wide. She was so excited to have her family there, and it showed.

It was quite an experience, and one I was very glad to be a part of.

Today, I found myself discounting the power of a listening ear and words of encouragement.

I know a girl who is going through a very difficult season in her life. She was a single mother for an extended period of time. She is recently married, and while she should be experiencing newlywed bliss she is selling everything she owns just to pay the bills.

I realized how much I take for granted, when she told me more of her story this morning. After listening to her talk about her situation and encouraging her, I heard a song on the radio that I knew I had to share with her. I posted the song to her her facebook wall (See Below), and she responded with, "Hey Erin Thanks for starting my day off so awesomly! Thats a great song!"

We somtimes doubt the power of an encouraging word. But when going through a very difficult trial, to have someone step out and do something thoughtful just because they were thinking of you, is not only a random act of kindness, but a random act of love.

I hope this song brings her hope in the midst of her pain...

Jan. 2, 2010

While in Braums picking up icecream to take to a friend who was stuck at home after just having a baby boy, I located a woman and decided that I would bless her as my random act of kindness for the day.

There was a sale going on: 4 cartons of icecream for $10.00. I only needed one carton, but I pretended to look around while she finished her selections. As she approached the counter I quickly got in line behind her. She had only 3 cartons of icecream in her basket, and the cashier told her about the bargain. I quickly jumped in and said, I have just one, I will buy yours and mine so that we can get the discount.

I don't think she quite understood me, because as I went to pay she said what are you doing? I told her I was getting our ice cream. She just stood there, mouth wide open, and staring at me. "But, why?", she asked. I just told, "Just because I want to."

The cashier asked if we knew each other, and when we said no, she too stood there in shock and with a confused smile on her face. As I completed the purchase, the woman looked at me, put her hand on my shoulder and with a twinkle in her eye said, "I hope that you get blessed for doing this."

I hope this lady felt the love of Jesus as a result of this sweet surprise!

"You can't have a perfect day without doing something for someone who'll never be able to repay you." -John Wooden

To witness an act of pure, selfless giving today is rare. We have been called to be cheerful givers, but in a world full of greed, cheerfulness and giving do not seem to go hand-in-hand. I know there have got to be countless situations in which I have bypassed people in need of love and giving, because I got caught up in being “busy”.

I commit to carrying a pocket of love with me wherever I go this year so that I may bless at least one person a day with a random act of kindness. It was once stated that it is impossible to love without giving, and this year I want to give of my time, talents, gifts, and resources to those who need it most. I will be blogging to help with my accountability to this adventure, and although I am not giving in order to receive, I also want to document the faithfulness of God. God promises that he will bless those who give generously.
