Kind Living, a collaboration with my wife, Melinda Shaw, launched today. The venture is designed to expand on the concept of my popular online kindness classes, inspiring people to bring more kindness into their lives. Learn more at KindLiving.net.
As part of Kind Living, I am posting several times a week to a blog. Included in these posts is a short story and a suggestion for a related kindness action. The first story is a light-hearted telling of Melinda's and my first date. The kindness suggestion is to have a date with your partner.

Title 1 school funding requires documentation of parent involvement. Created a summary of the 4th grade engineering project I did over the last couple months and sent it to the school.
Also gave a speech, whose message I hope was a gift to the audience.

Amy Krouse Rosenthal is a remarkable author who has penned numerous children’s books, wrote a memoir in the form of an encyclopedia (which was actually on the “recommended books” list on this site), started a yearly tradition in Chicago called “The Beckoning of Lovely,” and also happens to make youtube videos. She is well-versed in spreading kindness and the effect it can have. In fact, she explains a very interesting sort of kindness “measurement” called the jen ratio in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU30nlcVSIg&feature=channel_video_title.
The hope of every person who does a random act of kindness is that it reaches somebody and makes a difference in their life. The awesome thing is that little act of kindness not only inspires that one person, but it’s instantly reflected in the jen ratio of your community. Basically, if you put positive energy into the world, you feel the effects of it as well.

So I have written this blog to emphasize some of the Random Acts of Kindness happening all around the world. I will try to post one new story a day, but feel free to post others that you have read and/or heard about.

The middle school DI team is meeting again tonight.
As I drove home tonight, I saw a guy buy the sign with one of those ubiquitous cardboard signs.

Picked up trash in the neighborhood. I didn't see much trash when I started, but I still managed to fill a trash bag. Also played a game of Pit with the kids tonight.
When one is very young, the world is small - milk, hugs, sleep, diapers.

As the radioactive nuclear news was broadcasted, my body ached. In a matter of minutes (to what has now been weeks), a disaster went from horrific to catastrophic; All without even knowing the full affect these events will have in the years ahead. A reality to close to home, knowing that California could be next (as we are by the same design): Earthquake activity- check; Tsunami potential- check; Nuclear plant- check. Is it only a matter of time?
I wish I had the ability to make grandeous gestures, like Sandra Bullock and Demi Lovato, who each contributed 1 million dollars to the relief efforts in Japan. Instead, I took a page from the www.RandomActsofKindness.org website and have committed to doing 7 things this week for the HUMAN kind. Here goes:
1. Read Dr. Seuss to my adorable niece (3/22/11)
2. Donated blood (3/23/11) ouch!
3. UP at 3 a.m. (not typical) & grabbed breakfast for my colleagues (3/25/11)
4. Mowed my neighbors lawn (3/26/11)
5. Cared for my mother in laws animals (3/27/11)
6. Helped my brother with his business plan proposal (3/28/11) Good Luck!
7. Went onto www.globalgiving.org and donated to the Japanese relief efforts, using pay pal funds where I sold some old junk (vintage) items! (3/29/11)
And my efforts won't stop there. I will continue to be creative and find ways to make a difference by giving back! In the meantime, for this week, I know I've shared some niceness, said some kind words, and helped.
Beyond that, I wish the people of Japan and their family members happiness, health and good fortune. Let mayhem turn into meaning, for all.
Thank you for continuing on this journey with me....
