Many years ago, a man stopped on the highway to help my friend and me when our car had broken down. We were in rural upstate New York on a Sunday far from everything. We were alone and vulnerable. The stranger looked at the car, figured out what was wrong, drove us to the home of the owner of the nearest auto parts store, asked him open up his shop, found the part we needed, drove us back to our car, and fixed it. About three hours after we had broken down, we were on our way. Accepting only our thanks, the Good Samaritan made us promise to help someone else in the same way.
The “Kindness of Strangers” was an attempt to keep that promise 25 years later. The plan was to commit an act of kindness every day for an entire year. My hope was that performing mindful kindness would become a way of life for me and my family -- part of our everyday routine rather something we did once in a while. I wrote daily about each act of kindness on my blog The Kindness of Strangers.
